Professional Practice & Ethics (Classroom): 55 Hours (8.8%)

Four Phases of Mastery

PHASE 1: FOUNDATIONS (Approx. 185 Hours)

Goal: Establish a deep understanding of human anatomy, body systems, and conditions that affect massage contraindications and treatment planning.

  • Anatomy and Kinesiology: Study the Skeletal, Muscular, and Joint Systems; bony landmarks; joint movements; and muscle action.
  • Physiology and Body Systems: Focus on the function of all major body systems, cellular biology, tissue repair, and homeostasis.
  • Pathology and Contraindications: Learn general principles of disease and injury, including indications and absolute/local contraindications for massage.

II. PHASE 2: MASSAGE TECHNIQUES AND THEORY (Approx. 285 Hours)

Goal: Master core Swedish massage techniques and develop proficiency in essential advanced therapeutic modalities.

  • Swedish Massage Theory & Techniques Lab: Mastery of the five classic strokes (Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Tapotement, and Vibration), full-body routine sequencing, and critical safety skills like draping.
  • Deep Tissue and Myofascial Release: Principles of accessing deeper structures, appropriate pressure, understanding fascial systems, and trigger point therapy.
  • Specialized Modalities: Introduction to techniques such as Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage, Hydrotherapy, Stone Massage, Sports Massage concepts, and seated massage.

III. PHASE 3: PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE (Approx. 55 Hours)

Goal: Understand the legal, ethical, and business requirements of a licensed massage therapist.

  • Ethics and Professionalism: Client-therapist boundaries, sexual misconduct prevention, mandatory reporting, and confidentiality (HIPAA principles).
  • Legalities and Regulations: State and local licensing requirements, scope of practice, and malpractice/liability insurance.
  • Business and Marketing: Developing a business plan, marketing strategies, record keeping, and employment strategies.
  • Therapist Self-Care: Critical training in proper Body Mechanics for career longevity, injury prevention, and preventing burnout.

IV. PHASE 4: STUDENT CLINIC/PRACTICUM (100 Hours Minimum)

Goal: Apply all didactic knowledge and technical skills in a live, supervised clinical environment.

  • Student Clinic: Provide therapeutic massages to the public under direct faculty supervision. (90 hours)
  • Documentation and Intake: Master client intake, health history review, SOAP charting, and treatment planning. (10 hours)
  • Final Practicum: A comprehensive practical examination demonstrating the ability to perform a full-body routine safely, effectively, and professionally.

To Qualify, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Provide a physical, PPD and criminal history check within the past 12 months
  • Be able to physically perform the duties of a massage therapist
