Medical Assistant Core Curriculum
A comprehensive, structured program designed to align with the latest industry standards.
Program Overview
This intensive 16-week curriculum is structured for a one-day-a-week in-person schedule, supplemented by independent study, to ensure all necessary instructional hours are met.
It is built to prepare you for a recognized national certification exam, such as the CMA, RMA, or CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant).
Core Competencies:
Our program covers the full scope of the Medical Assistant role, preparing you for both the front and back office:
- Administrative Competencies:
- Medical Law & Ethics, including comprehensive HIPAA compliance.
- Office Management, focusing on scheduling and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Financial Practices, including basic medical billing and coding (ICD-10/CPT).
- General Medical Knowledge:
- Mastery of Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology (body systems and common pathologies).
- Patient Psychology, therapeutic communication, and professional conduct.
- Clinical Competencies:
- Patient Care: Taking vital signs and medical histories.
- Diagnostic Procedures: Performing 12-lead EKGs and basic vision/hearing tests.
- Laboratory Skills: Mandatory hands-on Phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary sticks) and specimen collection.
- Pharmacology: Safe medication administration, dosage calculations, and injection techniques (IM, Subcut, ID).
- Safety & Infection Control, adhering to OSHA standards and first aid/CPR.
Hands-on Experience & Certification Readiness
The curriculum emphasizes practical skills through dedicated lab sessions:
- Mandatory Externship: A critical component for certification, students must complete a minimum of 160 hours of supervised, unpaid work in an ambulatory healthcare setting. This hands-on practicum is key to eligibility for most Indiana grants.
- Key Lab Skills: Practice in manual blood pressure, venipunctures (30 minimum required for some certifications), various injection techniques, setting up 12-lead EKGs, and formal competency check-offs.
- Phase 4 Focus: Dedicated weeks for First Aid & CPR/BLS Certification and a comprehensive CCMA Exam Review with mock testing.
Indiana Funding Eligibility
This program is designed to align with the Indiana WorkOne/Next Level Jobs requirements, making it potentially eligible for the Workforce Ready Grant.
To Qualify, you must:
- be 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Provide a physical, PPD and criminal history check within the past 12 months
